The
West London Mission has a proud heritage – and a listed building
at Hinde Street. It has extensive records and archives deposited
with the national collection in Manchester, and more locally with
Westminster and Metropolitan Archives.
But
although aware of its tradition, and shaped by it, the Mission
is not bound by it. Simply, we wish to be aware of our roots (radical)
and to let the past be one of the factors that shape the present
and inform the future.
Crucial
to Biblical faith is ‘remembering.’ There is wisdom, often gained
at great cost, as to what it means to be people of God and disciples
of Jesus. In a very different era such wisdom remains important,
even if it may have to be reconfigured to meet our present age.
‘I’m
not going to study history, there’s no future in it’ said a bored
student. But there is wisdom for the future. There is a more profound
sense of who we are as individuals and communities. There is much
to celebrate and to treasure..
