Criminal Justice

WLM Katherine Price Hughes (KPH) is one of the 12 Independent Approved Premises in the country and is part-funded by the Ministry of Justice. This is a 24-hour residential service with staff and has a capacity to house 23 residents who are ex-offenders leaving prison and subject to public protection arrangements.

Our residents receive high-level support and contact daily to help in their journey in transitioning from custody to the community. Also, staff and residents engage in purposeful activities to enhance daily living skills and to help re-settle back into the community. To enhance the work, we do with the residents, KPH works collaboratively with other agencies to support the residents in accessing education, training and employment; accommodation; finances; family support; health and substance misuse issues, etc.

What sets us apart from the statutory Approved Premises, besides being independent, WLM KPH has the regular attendance of our Head of Faith & Spirituality. This intervention is unique as this is only available in prison, but not when in the community. Our Head of Faith & Spirituality also helps to facilitate group discussions with residents as well as see residents on a one-to-one basis regardless of their faith.

Here, at WLM KPH we have a culture of following up with residents who have left to check on their well-being as well as their progress. Additionally, we tend to welcome past residents particularly those who are most vulnerable and when they are most feeling at risk of suicide or self-harm. Some residents also maintain contact with staff via telephone when feeling anxious and staff are skilled in communicating effectively with them as well as signposting to other services that best address their needs.

WLM KPH maintains the objectives of our organisation WLM which is our Christian ethos of inclusivity of both residents and staff. This is reflected in our achievements of gaining the Enabling Environment award and maintaining this since 2017.

'I want to say a very big THANK YOU for the learning opportunities provided by WLM Katherine Price Hughes House during my 70 days placement.'

Ryan
