WLM St Luke’s is a unique community space in Kennington, Lambeth. We provide communal accommodation for low-income workers, offices for local start-ups and a wide range of support and education projects for local residents.

Our focus is financial resilience: we want our community to feel strong and confident about their finances: whether this is starting and sustaining paid work, managing household budgets, or accessing the right support services. We empower people to support each other and devise creative solutions to the problems that they face.

Our own financial health is a top priority. We are developing a range of enterprise activities, with the income from our accommodation and office space being essential in allowing us to continue and further develop our work.

Financial resilience

Money affects almost every aspect of our lives. It connects closely to our values, hopes and ambitions, as well as our worries, fears and frustrations. Perhaps most importantly, it affects our relationships with others and how we view ourselves.

Money Champions is an exciting new project delivered from our community centre in Kennington, St Luke’s Hub. It is a project designed to increase people’s confidence to manage their money and prevent them from falling into financial difficulties.

The right help at the right time.

Stresses and anxieties about money can impact negatively on people’s, health, well-being and family relationships. People often start worrying about money problems a long time before they decide to look for help, and by the time they do, their problems have often become a lot worse. Money Champions offers people someone they can talk to before they start getting into trouble.

We are recruiting Money Champions from a broad range of community networks, organisations, businesses, churches and faith groups across Lambeth.

These champions will be trained to have initial conversations with people about their money worries, offering useful tips and signposting to the help and professional advice they might need.

From September 2014 to March 2016, 268 Lambeth residents, employees and volunteers have completed our training to become Money Champions. Take a look at our inaugural Money Champions Review here.

Anyone living or working within Lambeth can be a Money Champion. If you’d like to register or learn more about the project, please get in touch with Laura McCullagh, Money Champions Coordinator: [email protected] or tel: 020 3242 0954 / 07572 595340

If you’d be interested in supporting us as a volunteer with the project please see our role description HERE

'So very grateful to all of you for your encouragement, advice and support that have helped me over the line with Universal Credit… a prayer answered'

Interested in training for your organisation?

Our Money Champions workshops are suitable for everyone - from staff and volunteer teams to community groups, faith networks, service users or customers. Our sessions are suitable for people who want to improve their own financial situations, and to those who want to support others. They are always interactive and fun, so are best when they include a good mix of participants who can share a range of ideas and experiences.

Our workshops can be tailored to meet your needs and can include topics such as 'brilliant budgeting', 'switch and save' (in relation to energy costs), an introduction to debt, and our newest workshop, understanding Universal Credit.

For more information about our financial resilience work contact Laura McCullagh by email [email protected] or phone her on 020 7735 5802.

Pret House at WLM St Luke's

WLM St Luke's is also home to Pret House at WLM St Luke’s, an accommodation project for homeless people in collaboration with Pret A Manger. West London Mission and The Pret Foundation, which was set up by Pret A Manger’s founders in 1995, inaugurated Pret House at WLM St Luke’s on Friday 8th February 2019, in a brilliant opening ceremony in the presence of many friends and supporters of both the organisations. This is a unique partnership to aid employability programme for homeless people. Pret House at WLM St Luke’s is centrally located, clean and comfortable. Everyone gets a good sized, bright room, shared bathroom facilities, a spacious kitchen/dining room and good TV and games rooms. The standard of decoration is high and we have done everything we can to make it feel like a home for our Rising Stars, not a hostel.
